The Phase 2 groups for the 2019 AASE League have been confirmed after a brilliant final round of action on Wednesday.

The top four from each of the two conferences, north and south, were set to be redrawn into two mini groups of four, with top and third in the north grouped with second and fourth in the south, and vice versa. Those in the bottom half of the table also go into mini leagues but remain divided north and south.

As such, Gosforth Academy and Brooksby Melton College will be in a group with Beechen Cliff and Exeter College, while Oaklands College and Myerscough College will be grouped with Hartpury College and St Paul’s Catholic College.

Gosforth finished top in the northern conference but only by a whisker after a 33-34 defeat to Oaklands College, their first of the season. Their bonus point kept them ahead though, but the victory for Oaklands allowed them to secure a high second place seeding.

Below them it was a dogfight, Brooksby Melton College knew they were through but not in what position and had a bye, so Bishop Burton and Myerscough were vying for the final spot.

What unfolded was spectacular as both just threw everything at with, raining in tries in the hope that their opponent would fail to get the bonus point. As it was, they both did, Myerscough winning by a staggering 83-0 scoreline at Moulton College, while Bishop Burton were almost as good, winning 72-14 at home to Stourport.

There two finished level on points but the greater points difference for Myerscough College saw them through, joining Oaklands College, Hartpury College, and St Paul’s Catholic College in Division 1 Pool B after half term.

In the Southern Conference things were no less spectacular, champions Hartpury College did the business and secured top spot but had to work oh so hard for a 24-22 victory against a Truro College side that theoretically was out of the running.

Beechen Cliff then tidied up the second place spot with a fantastic 52-0 victory against former champions Exeter College, but that left Exeter having to wait nervously on the outcome of St Paul’s Catholic College’s trip to SGS Filton College, as Filton could still overtake them. Another tight and tense game was unfolding there and either side could have ended up taking it, but in the end, much to Exeter’s joy, it was St Paul’s that took it 24-22. It sealed third for them, 4^th for Exeter, and sees Filton just miss out on qualification by a single point.
