South African Schools National Championship
The South African championship is based on who we feel would have won in a knock-out tournament between the 5 regional winners.
We started the competition in 1974 as this was when the first SA Schools rugby team was selected.
In our hypothetical tournament we would have a qualifier match between the winners of the Central and Eastern leagues as they are the least competitive leagues to determine who would qualify for the semi-finals of the national championship.
For example if Grey College had won the central league and Maritzburg College had won the eastern league there would be a “Central and Eastern” play-off between the two schools with the winners moving toward the Top 4.
In our sample we used an online random tournament generator to determine what the hypothetical semi-final draw would be, we then compared direct results between the teams (games that physically took place) or we looked at similar opposition to determine who would win the game in the event it took place.
