Mount St Mary’s 7s draw sees Wellington & Sedbergh prepare to lay down a marker

The draw for Sunday’s Mount St Mary’s 7s has been made and it looks as though this competition could give us the strongest indication yet as to how events at Rosslyn Park might unfold later this month.

The draw is littered with big names such as Barnard Castle, Llandovery College, RGS Newcastle, QEGS Wakefield, and last year’s 7s stars, King’s Worcester.

However the reason that this is such a hotly anticipated contest is the presence of the two very biggest names from the School Sevens world in 2012/13, Wellington College and Sedbergh.

Wellington College won the Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s Festival title, while Sedbergh won the Open competition before both then met at Twickenham during the London 7s in a showdown to decide the top school 7s side in the country.

Wellington were outstanding that day, beating Sedbergh comfortably to secure the unofficial title of Schools 7s Champions, however this year the two will be pitted together a whole lot earlier as a shake up in the Rosslyn Park rules sees Wellington hop across to the Open tournament.

All of which makes Sunday’s Mount St Mary’s 7s very interesting indeed.

Sedbergh are effectively the holders, having won in 2012, as the tournament was cancelled last year. They find themselves in a tricky Group 4, alongside Stonyhurst, Worksop, and a determined RGS Newcastle.

Wellington College line up in Group 3, where they will face an early Sedbergh challenge in the form of Sedbergh’s second string, as well as schoolboy greats QEGS Wakefield and St Peter’s York.

The hosts, Mount St Mary’s, are in Group 1 and are joined by some prestigious rugby names, Ampleforth College, Bradford Grammar School, and Nottingham High School.

Group 2 boasts equally prestigious names though, it includes the brilliant Welsh side, Llandovery College, who could well threaten for the title, last year’s school 7s stars, King’s Worcester, one of English and perhaps global schoolboy rugby’s biggest names – Barnard Castle, and also Silcoates School.

One way or another it is sure to be a superb tournament and ought to give us some very useful pointers ahead of the Rosslyn Park Nationals Schools 7s in the final week of the month.
