South West 7s draw gives Millfield an opportunity for 3 in 8 days

The draw for Sunday’s annual South West 7s has been made, with the tournament being held at Colston’s this year.

It will be the second successive weekend that Colston’s will be hosting a sevens tournament, following their own IKON sponsored 7s last weekend, which was ably won by Millfield.

Millfield will again descend on Colston’s this weekend for the South West 7s, as will a further five schools who were involved in last weekend’s competition, including hosts Colston’s, Kingswood, Prior Park, King’s Bruton, and King’s College Taunton.

Four of the sides will also be in action tomorrow in the Wycliffe 7s, Bristol Grammar School, Prior Park, Kingswood, and Millfield, who could win an incredible three trophies in eight days if things go their way.

There is no guarantee of things going their way though. Last year they were favourites to take the South West 7s crown, however the excellent King’s College Taunton 7 beat them 24-16 to take the title.

That final sees the two sides separated at the Group stage this year, with King’s College Taunton heading up Group B alongside hosts Colston’s, Monmouth, King’s Bruton, Christ’s College Brecon, and Cheltenham College, although Cheltenham will be without star centre Olly Thorley after his England U18s call up.

Millfield head up Group A, but like Cheltenham they are without a star centre of their own, Adam Hastings, who has been called up to the Scotland U18 side that plays England on Sunday.

Last year’s runners up are joined by Hereford Cathedral School, Kingswood, Prior Park, Taunton School, and Bristol Grammar School – with whom they are drawn against in tomorrow’s Wycliffe 7s.

Unfortunately neither of last year’s Plate finalists are able to attend this year Plate champions Sherborne did not enter, while QEH Bristol, the runners up, have an U18 NatWest Vase semi final at Allianz Park to keep them busy!

It should be an exciting tournament and another useful stepping stone on the road to the Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s.

Do you think Millfield will win 3 tournaments in 8 days, or will a side like King’s College Taunton step up and dash their hopes? Let us know via @FifteenRugbyXV or comment below.
