Quins win again at Rosslyn Park as Whiteley thrills on Saracens debut

Harlequins won the Serious Stuff London Floodlit 7s at Rosslyn Park for the fourth year in a row last night.

They beat Saracens 43-26 in the final, while Ealing Trailfinders beat the Army 29-24 in a superb Bowl final, capping a brilliant evening of seven-a-side rugby.

It was a night that really reflected the strength of the schools circuit this season though, with many sides featuring players who had starred for their schools this year.

The Champions, Harlequins, featured Whitgift’s Henry Cheeseman and Wellington College’s Ed Forshaw, but it was the runners up, Saracens, who had the star of the tournament – and not just among the schoolboys.

Millfield’s Tom Whiteley was making his debut for Saracens, he signed just two weeks ago, and having collected Player of the Tournament gongs by the hatful on the school circuit this year he topped the lot by claiming the London Floodlit 7s Player of the Tournament award last night.

Perhaps the moment that will stand out most in his mind came early on in the final as he rounded and outpaced Paul Sackey, the former England international, to sprint in for the opening try of the final.

Incredibly Whiteley will be in action again tomorrow, this time at Twickenham, as he plays for his school against John Fisher in a re-run of the Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s final during the Marriot London 7s – could even more success beckon?

Saracens reached the final after topping their pool and then beating London Wasps 24-12 in the semi final, while Harlequins topped their pool before playing the home side, Rosslyn Park, in the final 21-14. Rosslyn Park recorded perhaps the most dramatic result of the day, beating London Irish 33-0 in the Pool stage.

Ultimately though, this wonderful tournament was once again all about Harlequins. Their dominance of the tournament over the last four years has been total and again their performances were exceptional. To score 43 points against Saracens was simply sensational, the future certainly looks bright for the darlings of South West London.
