Millfield & Grammar School at Leeds set up a heavyweight final match up for Allianz Park

The finalists for the inaugural Schools Champions Trophy were decided this afternoon, hundreds of miles apart but united under the banner of this popular and exciting new tournament.

Grammar School at Leeds hosted Barnard Castle in an all Northern encounter, while Millfield hosted Oakham in a South West v Midlands clash.

The matches both went according to form and prediction, but neither was quite the walk in the park that that sounds like, though both winners secured pretty solid margins of victory.

Fifteen Rugby were live at Millfield’s Gareth Edwards pitch to watch them beat Oakham 32-17, you can see the report here – Millfield v Oakham, while streamed live by the RFU, Grammar School at Leeds defeated Barnard Castle 29-15.

Both sides have had their tough games in this competition but few would deny that they are deserving of their place in the final, indeed ahead of the first round these two, along with Epsom College, whom Oakham defeated in the quarter finals, were identified as the three big favourites.

The final will take place at Allianz Park on Wednesday 26th November, with both sides known to be doing everything in their power to get as many people along to the game as possible, it is one not to be missed and we would urge anyone with time on the 26th to head over to Allianz Park.

It ought to be a great game, Grammar School at Leeds are unbeaten, including some enormous scorelines. Their side won the NatWest Cup as U15s, a stat that tends to result in success for a school when that group hits U6th as GSAL’s have.

Their run to the final has seen them see off some real heavyweights of school rugby, RGS Newcastle, Bedford, Barnard Castle, and an excellent quarter final against RGS Guildford.

Millfield have suffered a couple of defeats this year, one to a sensational Wellington College side, and one to an in form Bromsgrove side as Millfield rested a few big names.

That might look like Grammar School at Leeds have the upper hand, but then you look at the rest of Millfield’s results and suddenly things look very much balanced again. Millfield’s kicked off the season by putting an incredible 67 points on RGS High Wycombe, before rounding off the first half of term by winning the St Joseph’s Festival – widely regarded as the toughest school tournament.

Their Champions Trophy run has seen them defeat Eton College and Oakham, as well as an incredible 16-14 victory over Tonbridge in the last 16, one of the most intense school games you will see.

This final ought to be a spectacular occasion – save the date, Wednesday 26th November, Allianz Park.
