St Paul’s Catholic College took a huge step towards finishing in top spot in the AASE South Division yesterday.
The London Irish AASE side beat one of the other main contenders for top spot in the South, Filton College, by a stunning 42-12 margin. It sent St Paul’s four points clear at the top on 32, after the pace-setters, Truro College, saw their game against Ivybridge postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
St Paul’s and Truro meet next week in what now looks like being a title deciding clash, though with Truro to face Filton the following week, there could yet be a few more twists and turns. Filton will certainly hope so, yesterday’s defeat leaves them nine points behind St Paul’s with just ten available.
The only other game to go ahead in the South was Bicton College, who began the day in 4th, versus Henley College, who were adrift at the foot of the table with just one win to their name. It will be Henley then who came away form this one the happier of the two as they secured a 15-15 draw.
In the North Division Hartpury College secured yet another bonus point win as the beat Moulton College 36-0. The only side that can challenge the unbeaten Hartpury for top spot are Oaklands College, who almost came unstuck against the bootom of the table Gosforth Academy, just holding out for a 29-24 victory.
Myerscough College and Worcester 6th form College are in a real tussle over third and fourth, with Moulton also challenging them, while Gosforth could yet still sneak into that pack. Myerscough’s 21-13 victory yesterday over Worcester was therefore hugely significant.
It looks set to be an exciting final two group rounds in the AASE leagues. Top spot in the South is still wide open.
