Schools Rugby – Weekend Preview & Predictions

A relatively quiet weekend of school rugby approaches, but the lack of numbers certainly odes not mean a lack of quality.

The shortened fixture list means that this week our Prediction Competition focuses on the U18 Academy Premiership, however there are still some very exciting school fixtures.

Hampton v St Benedict’s could grab a few headlines, St Benedict’s lost in a tense midweek NatWest Cup clash to Whitgift and will be up for this one, however Hampton have a Cup tie with Monmouth coming up and will be looking to keep their momentum up ahead of that one.

Millfield v Welsh Academicals ought to be interesting, Academicals are a largely unknown quantity but are expected to be a very tough nut to crack. Millfield won the reverse fixture last year though and will be doing everything in their power to win this one before they turn their attention to the 7s season.

Whitgift v City of London Freemen’s is a fixture that you would expect Whitgift to win, however having played a tough fixture against St Benedict’s in midweek and with a last 16 Cup tie coming up, they may be tempted to rest players, which could open the door for a famous victory for CoL.

RGS High Wycombe v QEGS Wakefield is one of the best looking fixtures of the day, two schools with a superb rugby reputation meeting as the fifteen-a-side season draws to a close. It is a long trip for QEGS and RGS are going to start as the marginal favourites but this will be a very special occasion.

Wilsmlow High School v St Ambrose College ought to be interesting, by form Wilmslow should be the strong favourites, however with a massive last 16 Cup tie coming up, they may rest players or use the game as a bit of a warm up/experiment. Nonetheless, they will not want to lose momentum and will know that they will need to perform to secure the win.

Elsewhere the likes of John Fisher and King’s Macclesfield are in action, King’s host Stockport Grammar, while Fisher travel to Tiffin. Crossley Heath host Manchester Grammar and Manu Tuilagi’s alama mater, John Cleveland, host Bishop Vesey’s.

All in all it should be an exciting weekend of rugby, hopefully not too affected by the weather. For almost everyone it is the final weekend of the season, with attention starting to turn next weekend to the 7s season.
