BMW Wellington International Festival Finishes Up In Style

The BMW Wellington International Festival concluded at a gloriously sunny Wellington College yesterday after a wet start to the day.

The day opened with England North taking on Wales Celts at 11.00. Both sides arrived having won one and lost one of their first two games of the week, but the Celts arrived in stronger form having beaten Scotland U16 48-0 on Wednesday following a narrow defeat to England South West a week ago. England North had lost to Scotland on the opening day but beat a very good France West side 8-7 on Wednesday.

The game ended up even though, a 17-17 draw, with tries from Sedbergh’s Wade Williams, Blundell’s Will Klinkenberg, and Grammar School at Leeds’ Jack Wafer.

In a tighter schedule than the previous two rounds of games, the next two matches kicked off at 12.45. France East, who had picked up two wins from two over London & South East and the South West, faced the Italy Academy Selection U17, who were yet to pick up a victory. That game went to script, with France East winning 17-10.

The other 12.45 kick off looked more likely to be able to go either way, England South West v Scotland U16. The South West had lost to France East but beaten Wales Celts, while Scotland had beaten England North before that crushing defeat to Wales Celts.

England South West took it comfortably though, winning 34-16 with tires from Queen Elizabeth, Crediton’s Marcus Street, Wellington College’s Dylan Moss, Dean Close’s Luca Cappuccini, Wycliffe College’s Tom Seabrook, and a brace from King’s College Taunton’s Aaron Chapman.

The two 14.30 kick offs, the final two games of the Festival, featured two England sides, with England London & South East faced Wales Druids and England Midlands playing France West.

London & South East v the Druids was a tight game, won narrowly by the English side 12-9 tries from Halliford’s James Gulliver and Langley’s Joe Hegarty. That was a second victory of the week for London & South East after they beat Italy on Wednesday and lost to France East on Sunday, while for the Druids it was a second loss, they had been beaten by France West before beating the Midlands.

In by far the most high scoring game of the week, England Midlands lost 24-45 to France West, a result that made France West the only side to secure three wins from their three games, with the Midlands slipping to a second defeat on the bounce after losing to the Druids on Wednesday.

There were four tries in England’s 24 points though, with Coundon Road’s Harry Garforth, Stowe’s Tosin Segun, River’s Ted Hill, and Harris Academy’s Isaac Blake-Mills all crossing the whitewash.

Following a successful week of near professional training plus the three games, some of the English and Welsh players will be in action again next week, with Wales hosting an U16 international between the two countries, with each side selecting from those who have impressed the most over the last week.
