Weekend Review: Daily Mail Trophy – The Final Round

The Daily Mail Trophy draws to a close this weekend with a number of positions in the table far from settled.

The title was wrapped up last weekend when Wellington College beat St Paul’s to claim a third title in a row, a stunning achievement that is a real testament to the challenging nature of their fixture list and their outstanding results. They have amassed a huge 2.8 extra points because of their fixture list, 0.8 more than anyone else in the top 10, their fixture list is that tough.

Wellington still have to play Marlborough College on Saturday, but their place at the top is assured. Harrow and Sedbergh below them in second and third respectively have both finished their Daily Mail Trophy games for the season.

They could come under threat from St Peter’s York in fourth though. A bonus point win for St Peter’s against Pocklington on Saturday would see them jump above Sedbergh and be level with Harrow on Merit and League points, however points difference and a better win/loss record would see St Peter’s finish in second.

It would have to be a bonus point win to threaten second and third though, a regular win for St Peter’s would see them hold station in fourth. The sides from 5th to 9th, Kirkham, Clifton, Rugby , Brighton, and Woodhouse Grove, have all played their final Daily Mail Trophy games, yet their positions could also change.

A defeat for St Peter’s would see them drop to at least 10th, bumping the others up a position, while a loss would drop them to 9th, a draw to sixth, and a bonus points draw to fifth.

Canford arrived in the Top 10 this week after they beat Seaford College and Millfield lost to Sedbergh. On Saturday Canford face Bishop Wordsworth’s, and a bonus point victory there would see the climb up to sixth, fifth if St Peter’s lose, while a regular win would see them climb to seventh.

Millfield’s midweek loss to Sedbergh saw them drop to eleventh, where they will stay unless Canford lose to Bishop Wordsworth’s, a result that will see the two sides swap places.

Below them there is plenty left to play for, but what is certain is that broadly speaking we know who is going to finish at the top end of the 2016 Daily Mail Trophy table.

The question, for you our readers, is do you think it is reflective of the season?
