Schools Rugby Midweek Preview: Evening kick offs the highlight of a busy midweek

With the school season now full underway, that means the start of the full midweek schools rugby schedules too.

Midweek rugby is becoming ever more congested with more and more fixtures and tournaments meaning that it is simply impossible for matches to only take place on Saturdays, and this week we see games on every day of the week.

Monday

There was one fixture on Monday as Sir Thomas Rich’s hosted Argentine tourists Colegio Cardenal Newman from Buenos Aires. Tommies sat out Saturday’s fixtures, but were unable to capitalise, falling to a 29-5 defeat against the tourists.

Tuesday

Tuesday saw the calendar thicken a little, with Loretto beating Preston Lodge 42-14 in the Scottish Cup. RGS Newcastle had a tough game against Chilean tourists Craighouse, who beat their hosts 17-5. Langley and Bishop’s Stortford College were also in action but their result is yet to come through.

Wednesday

Wednesday is when the ball really starts to get rolling with four Daily Mail Trophy clashes and a NatWest Vase game.

Arguably the main draw of the day comes in the evening at Sixways where Sedbergh, fresh from beating Whitgift, meat a Marlborough College side that lost by just a single point to Bryanston at the weekend.

There is plenty else to be excited by too though, not least Reigate Grammar v St George’s Weybridge. St George’s last played on Friday where a strong defensive effort saw them past Reed’s, while Reigate beat Christ’s Hospital on Saturday.

There are two big Daily Mail Trophy games in the north of the country as Ampleforth College host Dame Allan’s. Ampleforth are off to a good start this season and will be looking to keep that up and to return to their past glory. Woodhouse Grove meanwhile lost their opening game so will be looking to make up for that on Wednesday against Ashville College.

In the NatWest Vase Iselworth & Syon host Cardinal Vaughan. Elsewhere there is a big game between Abingdon and Cokethrope, while Bablake also host KES Aston.

Eltham College, fresh from beating Judd on Saturday, travel to City of London Freemen’s, while there is an all King Edward’s derby as KES Stratford host King Edward VI Five Ways.

In Kent King’s Canterbury host Cranbrook, while on the other side of the country King’s College Taunton welcome Plymouth College up the road. King’s Grantham meanwhile host Worksop College in Lincolnshire. Just along the road Leicester Grammar meet Welbeck.

Wilmslow High School are back in action after that stunning win over St Ambrose, they face The Grange. Meanwhile there is a huge local derby between Windsor Boys’ and Shiplake College.

Thursday

On Thursday there is just the one fixture as Bradford Grammar, who beat Hymers College 25-20 at the weekend, host Chilean tourists, Craighouse.

Friday

There are a couple of massive fixtures under the lights on Friday night. The first sees Stockport Grammar meet Manchester Grammar at Stockport RFC for an 18.15 kick off, before Barnard Castle host Dame Allan’s, in what will be Dame Allan’s second midweek game this week, at 18.30 on Darlington Mowden Park’s artificial pitch.

Friday also sees Ravens Wood travel to St Olave’s, and Warminster host Wells Cathedral School.
