Schools Rugby Midweek Roundup: NatWest Semi Finalists confirmed, Giggleswick on 7s form

An exciting few days of school rugby have seen the draws for all four U18 NatWest competition semi finals confirmed.

On Wednesday and Thursday the remaining Plate, Vase, and Bowl quarter finals were played, while the Cup quarter finals had already been completed weeks ago.

U18 NatWest Plate

In the Plate Lymm High Schools v Solihull was already confirmed as the first semi final, with Reigate Grammar School confirmed in the second semi final. However Regiate’s opponents were still to be decided as Crossley Heath were still to welcome Cambridge’s Hills Road 6th form College.

On Wednesday the two sides met, with Crossley Heath taking the victory in a commanding performance, 27-7. The face Reigate Grammar in the semi finals, which are due to take place on the week of the 27th February.

Outside of the NatWest fixtures there were plenty of other exciting games. Reigate Grammar School and Tiffin played out a thriller, with Regiate just sneaking the win, 22-21.

There was a great fixture between Hayes and Salesian too, with Hayes beating their hosts in a stunning game of rugby, 34-29.

Cooper’s Coborn were in flying form for a 52-17 win over King John School, while Queen Ethelburga’s continued their mighty start to 2017 with a brilliant 33-17 win over AASE side Myerscough College.

7s

Rydal Penrhos was the venue for Wednesday’s 7s, with the Welsh school hosting a six team round robin event. Birkenhead, Giggleswick, Manchester Grammar School, Newcastle-Under-Lyme School, and Oswestry were the guests, with Giggleswick finishing out on top by points difference over Birkenhead.

Birkenhead actually beat Giggleswick 12-5, however a subsequent 21-0 defeat to Oswestry saw Giggleswick nick the title that to their superior points record.
