RGS High Wycombe secured the Solihull 7s title on Wednesday.
RGS performed exceptionally all day, topping the list in what was a tournament packed with top schools.
After topping an initial group containing Bloxham, Lawrence Sherriff, Pate’s Grammar, and Aberdare, RGS were through to Group A of the Cup Groups.
The format of the competition was that the six winners of the initial groups were then split into two groups of three. Effectively these were ‘semi final’ groups, with the winners of each of those meeting in the final. The Plate took on a similar format, with second place finishers from the initial groups, and the Bowl was for teams placed third in those initial groups.
RGS’ Cup group contained St Peter’s Gloucester and Ellesmere College, and having beaten both of them they were through to the Cup final.
Their opponents were Coleg Llandrillo, who had topped their phase one Group ahead of King’s Macclesfield, Bishop Vesey’s Grammar, Warwick, and The Crypt.
They then faced Old Swinford Hospital and fellow Welshmen Monmouth in their Cup semi final group, coming through that unscathed.
RGS High Wycombe were just too strong in the final, secured a 19-15 victory to take home the silverware.
King’s Macclesfield took home the Plate, showing the strength of that initial group, won by Llandrillo. King’s finished ahead of KES Stratford and Bromsgrove in their Plate semi final group, beating Loughborough 26-17 in the final.
Meanwhile the Bowl was won by another side from that treacherous initial Group D, Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School. Nottingham High School and Bablake were seen off in the semi final groups before Lawrence Sherriff were beaten 26-19 in the final.
Unfortunately hosts Solihull missed out on qualification for any of the Trophy competitions. Their U18 NatWest Plate semi final against Lymm High School unfortunately clashed so a second VII had to be fielded, they will feel things turned out for the best though after a well run competition, and a 10-8 victory for the 1st XV, sending them to the Plate final against Reigate Grammar School at Sixways on Tuesday 28th March.
The story at Solihull on Wednesday though was RGS High Wycombe, who performed exceptionally well and will be eager to continue that through the season and into Rosslyn Park in a few weeks time.
