Merchiston 7s: Glory for the hosts – Merchiston Castle claim their own title

Merchiston Castle secured their own title on Sunday at the Merchiston 7s.

They beat Strathallan 28-14 in the final to back up the triumph of their U16s earlier on in the day.

It was a tough competition for the U18s, with a number of side having to deal with absentees due to the Scotland U18 v England U18 fixture. Merchiston and Dollar Academy, whom the hosts beat 33-7 in their semi final, were affected fairly badly by this, while Stewart’s Melville, who won the 5th/6th place play off by beating Dundee High School 28-5, were missing four key players.

Strathallan were, perhaps, the surprise package, topping Group B ahead of Dollar academy, Stewart’s Melville, and George Watson’s College, who won the 7th place play off against Robert Gordon’s, 45-0.

They then beat Edinburgh Academy, who finished second in Group A behind Merchiston and ahead of Dundee High School and Robert Gordon’s, in the semi finals by a 21-10 scoreline.

Merchiston Castle had too much in the tank in the final though, securing that all impressive 28-14 victory and a second title for the school in one day.
