Worth 7s: Brighton College on form to retain Worth title

Brighton College turned their fifteen-a-side brilliance and seven-a-side promise into a title on Sunday as they lifted the Worth 7s Cup.

The reigning champions beat Bedford by a stunning 33-0 margin in the final, having topped a tricky Group C and then conquering Lord Wandsworth College in the quarter finals and St John’s Leatherhead in the semis.

They were far from the only star turn though, Felsted were highly impressive, just a week on from losing their NatWest Cup semi final the had their 7s heads switched on, topping a tough Group D that included Lord Wandsworth college, KCS Wimbledon, and Seaford College, before beating St Paul’s to reach the semi finals, where they missed out by a try against Bedford.

The Oratory were another side to perform well, beating the hosts, Worth, to top spot in Group A. Their run came to an end in the quarter finals though, when St John’s Leatherhead, second behind Bedford in Group B, beat them 29-12.

Bedford themselves were excellent through the groups and early knockouts, seeing off Worth 20-5 and that narrow win over Felsted.

However the strength and guile of this Brighton College side was simply too much in the end. In getting past the likes of St Paul’s, Hurstpierpoint, and Campion in the group stage, they were well warmed up.

A 31-7 win over Lord Wandsworth College was a strong warning sign of what was to come, and they followed that up with a 10-0 semi final win over St John’s before that stunning 33-0 win in the final.

KCS Wimbledon lifted the Plate, beating Caterham 17-12 in the final after 38-0 and 38-14 wins in the semi finals and quarter finals against Ardingly College and Campion respectively.

Worth’s 2nd VII meanwhile secured the Shield, beating Ardingly College 2nd VII by a 41-0 margin in the semi finals before a stunning 58-0 effort in the final against Beechwood.

The day was all about Brighton College in the end though, and their impressive displays as they laid down a strong marker ahead of the HSBC Rosslyn Park National School 7s in just over a week’s time.
