Wisbech 7s: Stamford claim inaugural Wisbech Grammar School 7s title

Stamford beat Wellingborough 15–7 to secure the Cup at the inaugural Wisbech Grammar School U18 VIIs.

In the group stage they beat the hosts 28–5 and Eastern & Otley College 22–7 before defeating Uppingham 5–0 in a hotly contested semi-final.

The final saw them come up against Wellingborough School, who had won their group by beating Norwich 12–0, Uppingham 19–14 and Culford 24-12 before beating the host Wisbech Grammar in the semi-final, 35–8, with a score in the last play of the game.

The final saw no let-up in the speed and physicality that had been seen by both sides during the day. Two Stamford tries edged them 10–0 ahead at half time. A more direct approach by Wellingborough saw them come back with a score to take it to 10–7, before an interception try in the last play secured Stamford’s well deserved victory 15-7.

With Cup semi-final defeats for Wisbech Grammar and Uppingham both sides looked to take home some silverware in the Plate final.

It was the hosts who took the lead 7–0, before a score just before half time drew both sides level. The second half saw Uppingham score first before a Wisbech Grammar response drew them back; however the missed conversion left the hosts training 14–12. As they pushed for another score Uppingham took an interception score in the last play to secure the Plate 19–12.

The Bowl tournament saw Norwich School, Culford and Eastern & Otley College play out a triangular. Eastern beat Norwich 28–12 before losing 29–19 to Culford, whilst Norwich beat Culford 10–0 in the other game. With one win each the Bowl came down to points scored, with Eastern & Otley taking home the silverware having scored 47 points across both games.
