Sherborne won Sunday’s Bryanston 7s in dramatic circumstances as a sudden death drop goal secured them victory over Portsmouth Grammar School in the final.
Sherborne had been in great from all day after topping a group that included the hosts, Bryanston, Wellington School, and Bristol Grammar School, who were unfortunately without a few players due to the England U18 international.
They then followed that up with a stunning 40-4 victory over Kingswood in the semi finals, a side who had topped a group including Dauntsey’s, AASE side Beechen Cliff, and Christ College Brecon.
Portsmouth’s route had seen them head up Group D ahead of Clifton College, KES Bath, and Canford, before winning a cracking semi final against Millfield, the Group B winners, 19-12.
What followed was a stunning final. It finished 24-24 (by most estimations), with both side having gone all out for victory in a brilliant game. That meant sudden death, where Sherborne managed to secure the crucial drop-goal score to take the title in quite extraordinary circumstances.
The Plate, meanwhile, was won by the side who finished second to Portsmouth in their group, Clifton College, who beat the host school Bryanston in the final, having beaten Downside in the semi finals.
Over in the Bowl KES Bath lifted the silverware after a 42-7 win over Wellington School in the final, while the Shield was won by Canford, 31-0 winners in the final over Bristol Grammar School.
The day, ultimately, though was about Sherborne and Portsmouth Grammar School, who both performed outstandingly well to reach the final and then produce a stunning final game of the day.
