King’s Worcester 7s: Last chance for teams to prove RPNS7s form

The King’s Worcester 7s takes place on Wednesday at Droitwich RFC.

The competition is one of the final tournaments of the season before the HSBC Rosslyn Park National School 7s and has attracted some of the biggest teams in the region as they look to hit their straps ahead of the Nationals.

Sixteen teams will be in attendance, split between four groups of four. The top two teams in each group will head to the Cup quarter finals, with those finishing third heading to the Plate semis, and those in last place joining the Bowl semi finals.

Warwick are the reigning champions. Though they won in 2015, beating Ellesmere College 42-7, they are the reigning champions as last year’s tournament was unable to be played.

The NatWest Cup finalists will likely have other matters on the mind this year though, however their group does look exciting. They are in Group C, where the side they beat in that 2015 final, Ellesmere College, also reside, along with KES Stratford, Plate runners-up in 2015, and The Crypt.

The hosts, King’s Worcester, are in Group A. They last won the Cup in 2013, the same year that Adams Grammar School won the Plate. Adams Grammar are also in Group A, as are Christ College Brecon and Hereford Cathedral School.

2015 Plate winners, RGS Worcester, are in Group D, where they are joined by Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School, Shrewsbury, and an in form St Peter’s Gloucester side.

Group B, meanwhile, includes 2014 Plate winners, KES Birmingham. They will fancy their chances of a Cup run this year as while their group is very strong, containing Old Swinford Hospital, Sir Thomas Rich’s, and Solihull, both Solihull and Old Swinford Hospital have big NatWest fixtures coming up. Old Swinford Hospital are in the Bowl final in a fortnight, with Solihull in the Plate final, so their focus is likely on the long form of the game.
