AASE Round 2: Exeter College on form again

A number of sides took to the AASE field for the first time this week as round 2 commenced.

Gosforth Academy, Moulton College, Myerscough College, and Beechen Cliff all played their first games of the AASE season.

Northern Conference

Last year’s runners up, Gosforth Academy, opened their season away to newcomers Brooksby Melton. Brooksby won their opener against Bishop Burton so arrived with confidence, but Gosforth’s all-court offloading game proved too much to handle as they came away 52-36 winners, showing the sort of attacking flair that took them to last year’s final.

We said in our preview that it was key for Bishop Burton to bounce back from that defeat, particularly having found the going tough last season. Bounce back they did, with a win over Moulton College in an absolute thriller, 35-31.

The final game in the North saw Myerscough College open their season at home to Oaklands College. Myerscough hopes were high but Oaklands performed well to take an impressive 22-3 victory, making them the only side in the round not to concede a try.

Southern Conference

The Southern Conference featured the top billed tie of the round, Beechen Cliff v Exeter College. Exeter College won the AASE title last year, the only side bar Hartpury College to do so. They were able to thanks to Beechen Cliff defeating Hartpury College in the second pool stage.

Exeter already had a solid win under their belts this season, while for Beechen Cliff it was their first game. Expectations were high all around, but it was Exeter that came out on top with an outstanding 40-20 victory, and their results so far suggest that they are a side to really keep a close eye on this year again.

Hartpury College got off to a slow but winning start against Henley College last week, but they were firing with all guns blazing on Wednesday as they saw off Truro College by a stunning 56-14 margin. Hartpury College will definitely be in the mix at the end of the season, as always.

The final result in the South, SGS Filton College v St Paul’s Catholic College, is yet to be confirmed.
