U18 Schools Plate: Round 1 Preview

The U18 Schools Plate gets underway this week with some brilliant games of rugby up and down the country.

 

The Plate should some good action, with top sides coming down after defeat in the opening round of the Cup, and as we saw with Woodhouse Grove last year, there is stunning rugby to witness in the Plate.

 

North A

 

North A sees three games on Wednesday, Ripley St Thomas are already through and face Wednesday’s winner between Rydal Penrhos and Cheadle Hulme. Meanwhile Sir John Dean’s host Manchester Grammar and Merchant Taylors’ welcome St Mary’s Crosby.

North B

 

There are just two games in North B, both on Wednesday. Yarm travel to East Durham, with the winner facing Hartlepool 6th form College next round as they have a bye. Elsewhere Ermysted’s Grammar travel to Stockport Grammar. The winner there hosts Hymers College next round after they too enjoy a bye.

Midlands A

 

Midlands A sees action on Tuesday as Oundle make the trip to Bedford Modern. The winner will face one of the Plate favourites, Bloxham, who have a first round bye. On Wednesday there is a massive game as the reigning Vase champions Langley host the ever strong St Joseph’s College, with a second round tie Saffron Walden the prize.

Midlands B

 

There are three Wednesday games in Midlands B. Sandbach host KES Cam Hill, while RGS Worcester welcome Old Swinford Hospital. The winners of those two will meet in the second round. Loughborough Grammar are already there thanks to a bye, they await the winners of Trent College v Hill House, who are also in action on Wednesday.

London & South East A

 

Both Seevic College and Haberdashers’ have opening round byes and they will meet in round 2 after half term. On Wednesday the identity of the other two second round sides will be confirmed as Skinners’ travel to Sir Joseph Williamson’s and Langley Park host Colfe’s.

The winners of Wednesday’s game between Emanuel and London Oratory will head straight to the third round thanks to a second round bye. The rest of the section will have to wait longer. Sussex Downs host Christ’s Hospital in round 1 on Wednesday, and will face either Lord Wandsworth College or George Abbot in the second round, they also meet on Wednesday.

South West A

 

South West A sees only one game on Wednesday thanks to three byes. Truro School and Exeter School meet to decide who will host Taunton next round. KES Southampton and Sherborne both have byes and know that they will meet in round 2.

South West B

 

There is no action at all in South West B this week as all four sides have first round byes. That sets up two second round ties after half term, St Peter’s Gloucester v Abingdon and Cokethorpe v Weston College.
