School 7s: 24 schools set for Wednesday’s Solihull 7s

The Solihull School 7s takes place on Wednesday, with 24 sides gathering for one of the key tournaments of the season.

With the unseasonably warm weather, it should be perfect 7s conditions for once, hopefully providing for an enthralling day of school 7s.

The 24 sides are split into four groups of six, with the top two from each group heading to the Cup quarter finals and those finishing in third place in the groups heading to the Plate semi finals.

The hosts, Solihull, are drawn in Group B where they will compete against Ellesmere College, who went well at the Christ College Brecon 7s on Sunday, reaching the Plate final. Joining those two are The Crypt, Alcester Grammar, Solihull 6th form College, and Welsh side Coleg Llandrillo.

Group A hosts one of the tournament favourites, Bloxham, who were outstanding in the fifteen-a-side season. They are in one of the trickier groups, with Bishop Vesey’s Grammar and Monmouth definite threats, so too RGS Worcester, St Peter’s Gloucester, and AASE side Stourport High School.

Sir Thomas Rich’s are another side expected to challenge for honours here. They are drawn in Group C where KES Stratford will be among the major challengers. Newcastle-Under-Lyme will be another competitor in this group along with Kenilworth and Lawrence Sheriff, however Bromsgrove will be the big challenger in this one. The former Schools Cup winners will be in the mood to hunt for silverware.

The tournament was cancelled due to the weather last year and 2017 champions are not involved this year, so 2016 and 2015 champions Warwick are the most recent winners of the Solihull 7s in the draw. Warwick however will likely send a 2nd VII given that they have a Schools Cup semi final in a little over a week. That throws open Group D, and with Old Swinford Hospital, Loughborough Grammar, KES Aston, Bablake, and Welshmen Cloeg y Cymoedd all involved, it really could go any way.
