School 7s: Hampton Schools Founders’ Day 7s Draw – Hampton aim for 3 titles in 4 years

The Hampton School Founders’ Day 7s takes place on Wednesday, with some top schools in the region heading to Hampton.

It is an expanded tournament this year, with a 2nd VII competition running in tandem with the main Cup tournament.

Ten teams will compete in the 1st VII tournament, split into two groups of five, while in the 2nd VII competition there are six teams, split into two groups of three. The 1st VII tournament will see the winner of each pool play in the Cup final, while the runners up will meet in the Plate final.

Meanwhile in the 2nd VII tournament the top two in each group will play semi finals in the Trophy, while the 3rd placed side in each group will play a play-off game.

Focusing on the 1st VII draw, the reigning champions, Brighton College, are unable to attend this year, leaving the hosts, Hampton, as the most recent champions.
Hampton won back to back tournaments in 2016 and 2017 before winning the Plate last year, and they are drawn in Group 1 for this years tournament. Alongside them are Caterham, who have looked excellent on the 7s field over the last couple of years, as well as RGS High Wycombe, St Benedict’s, and John Fisher, who beat Hampton in the 2015 final, which was sandwiched by Plate titles in 2014 and 2016.

Group 2 looks heavyweight. Cranleigh are top seeds, they have finished as runners up in each of the last three tournaments and must be absolutely itching to go just one better this year.

They will face stiff challenges though, not least in St John’s Leatherhead, who replace Brighton College. Also in the group are Hurstpierpoint College, who enjoyed a sensational fifteen-a-side season and reached Sunday’s Sussex 7s final. 2008 champions, Campion, are also in the group along with last year’s Plate runners up, St Paul’s Catholic College.

Over in the 2nd VII tournament group one sees St Benedict’s and Caterham drawn alongside the hosts, Hampton. Meanwhile Group 2 features Campion, St Paul’s Catholic College, and John Fisher.
