Sedbergh are looking as formidable on the 7s field as they were during the fifteen-a-side season.

The reigning Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s champions were in action at the Worksop 7s on Saturday a led a strong field to claim the Cup.

Though Worksop College were not competing, the have a Schools Vase semi final to worry about, they still hosted eight sides on Saturday, including the eventual champions, Sedbergh.

Sedbergh came through a tricky Group 1 ahead of Mount St Mary’s College, Queen Ethelburga’s, and second place Millfield, who also qualified for the Cup semi finals, with Mount St Mary’s and Queen Ethelburga’s heading to the Plate. As if to underline the quality of the group, Mount St Mary’s would then go on to lift the Plate later in the day.

Group two meanwhile saw Loughborough College and Pocklington emerge as their Cup semi finalists. Coming out of the groups probably the last thing any side would want was a semi final against two of the greatest names in schools rugby and school 7s history, Sedbergh and Millfield.

That was exactly what awaited these two though, with Loughborough College, second in the group, facing Sedbergh, and Pocklington lining up against Millfield.

For Loughborough College it was a tough semi final, Sedbergh doing what Sedbergh do and playing some scintillating rugby for a quite outstanding 41-0 victory. For Pocklington though the tale was different, buoyed by their group win and the excellent rugby played so far, they put in a brilliant shift to defeat Millfield, who last week won the Christ College 7s, 21-10. A brilliant effort.

The final was simply a bridge too far for Pocklington though, Sedbergh proving once again just what quality they have as they continued to rain in the tries for a 40-12 victory. It is not just quality that they have either, it is quality in depth. A whole host of talented players did not even travel with them.

With the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s less that a month away, the men in brown look as though they have a great chance of repeating Cranleigh’s trick of 2016 and 2017 by securing back to back titles. One thing is for certain though, as the performances of Epsom College, Blundell’s, Kirkham Grammar, and indeed Cranleigh themselves have shown in the last few days, among others, it will be far from easy.
