U20 6 Nations: Ireland name side to chase Grand Slam dream

Ireland have named their side that will be going for a Grand Slam against Wales on Friday night.

Kicking off at 7.05pm at Zipworld Stadium in Colwyn Bay, the game will be shown live on RTE and S4C. Ireland have already won the championship, with four wins from four, but a win on Friday would hand them the Grand Slam.

Head Coach Noel McNamara has made just one change, understandably, to the side that beat reigning champions France in a thriller, 31-29, last week as fit again Harry Byrne comes back in at fly half, where he partners Craig Casey.

Sean French will again be at inside centre, with Liam Turner once more at outside centre with a back three of Jake Flannery at full back, Angus Kernohan on the right wing and Jonathan Wren on the left.

Up front the pack is unchanged as it has been all tournament, Josh Wycherley, Dylan Tierney-Martin, and Tom Clarkson are again the front row with Niall Murray once again partnering captain Charlie Ryan in the second row.

The back row, meanwhile, sees John Hodnett again at number 8, with Martin Moloney and Scott Penny his flankers.

The bench sees John McKee, Callum Reid, and Ryan Lomas cover the front row, with Ryan Baird and David McCann looking after the rest of the pack. Cormac Foley, Ben Healy, and Rob Russell are the cover in the backline.

Speaking to www.irishrugby.ie ahead of the game, McNamara said:

“It was great to win the title with last week’s win over France, but it’s testament to the players how they’ve parked the victory and are fully focused on what can be achieved in Wales this Friday night.:

“They are a really tight-knit group, which I think has been evident in their performances over the last number of weeks. They have one final test this week and the group are really relishing the challenge and opportunity that Friday will bring.”
