Wales have named their side to host Ireland on Friday night at Zipworld Stadium in Colwyn Bay.

Ireland have already wrapped up the championship after Wales’ defeat to Scotland last week, but a win for Wales would prevent Ireland from sealing a Grand Slam.

Head Coach Gareth Williams has made five changes in personnel to the side that lost 27-20 to Scotland, with Oakham and Leicester Tigers star Sam Costelow one of the major ones, he comes in at fly half with Ospreys’ Cai Evans moving to full back.

That means former Bristol Bears man Ioan Davies moves to the wing from full back, where he is joined by the incoming Tomi Lewis of Scarlets. There is a change at outside centre too, where Ospreys’ Tiaan Thomas-Wheeler comes in to partner the retained Aneurin Owen of the Dragons. His clubmate Dafydd Buckland remains at scrum half.

In the pack Ospreys’ Rhys Davies comes in at loosehead, Cardiff Blues’ Ben Warren is again at tighthead, while Ospreys’ Dewi Lake captains the side from hooker.

There is a change in the second row too as Dragons’ Ed Scragg comes in to partner Cardiff Blues’ Teddy Williams. The back row is unchanged, with Llandelli’s Ellis Thomas at blindside, and Scarlets pari Jac Morgan and Iestyn Rees at openside and number 8 respectively.

The bench meanwhile sees Bristol Bears’ Nick English again cover prop with Will Griffiths and Tom Devine his front row replacement partners. Scarlets’ Jac Price and Cardiff Blues’ Ioan Rhys Davies cover the second and back rows respectively.

Dan Babos of the Dragons cover scrum half with Max Llewellyn and Ryan Conbeer, of Cardiff Blues and Scarlets respectively, covering the rest of the backline.

Speaking to www.wru.wales ahead of the game, Gareth Williams said: “It was a big aim of ours to win the championship but that is obviously off the table after our disappointing defeat to Scotland last time out but Friday is still a Test match at international level, against a traditional rival in Ireland so I’m sure it will be a fantastic occasion.”

“Ireland will be very driven to finish the job off after claiming the championship with one round to go but if we show the quality and passion from the England game then we should be able to give a good account of ourselves.”

“We know Ireland are seeking a Grand Slam, but we are focused on ourselves, we’re appreciative on how well they have done this campaign and they are a real threat and possess leadership across the park. But the boys are determined to finish the campaign off on a high note in front of a big home crowd.”
