Schools Rugby Midweek Preview: A quiet start to 2020

After a well earned Christmas break schools rugby returns for 2020 in a very quiet manner of Wednesday with just four fixtures.

January and the start of February are always a slightly unusual time in the Schools Rugby world, the very best players tend not to be available due to the U18 Academy League, while some schools have already switched focus to 7s, some are still playing a bit of 15s, others doing so but with development squads, and for the majority rugby is off the main radar for now until the 7s season begins in earnest.

Regardless, with this being the first week back there is very little midweek action, for the majority of those playing in this early part of January, Saturday will be the first big day of the year.

Nevertheless, one fixture particularly stands out among the four as Sir Thomas Rich’s host Millfield. Millfield will probably be missing a few due to the Academy League, Sir Thomas Rich’s too, though they may be able to call on any Gloucester players as Gloucester have a bye. In any case it should be a good game, both finished off the year in great form, Millfield in particular, who ended Sedbergh three year unbeaten run with an incredible performance in their final game of the season.

The other three games all take place in the South east, with Folkstone Academy hosting Oakwood Park Grammar, Ravens Wood hosting Beth’s Grammar, and Richard Hale making the trip to Robert Clack.
