School 7s: Uppingham 7s Draw & Preview

This Sunday the Uppingham 7s returns for its third edition with a strong field attending across both the U18 and U16 tournaments.

Oakham are the reigning U18 Champions, having beaten Bromsgrove in the 2020 final, while Uppingham themselves are the reigning U16 champions, they beat Framlingham College in 2020 and actually won the only other U16 competition this tournament has had, in 2018, as well.

U18s

The U18 tournament features ten teams split into two groups of five. Each group will then play their counterparts from the other group in a rankings final, with the top two naturally competing for 1st Place and the Cup.

Hosts Uppingham are in Group 1, where they are joined by old rivals Oundle, as well as The Leys from Cambridge, Norwich School, and a very strong Denstone College group.

Group 2 meanwhile features the reigning champions and Uppingham’s nearest rivals Oakham, as well as the side Oakham beat in that 2020 final, Bromsgrove, and the 2020 Plate champions, Stamford. Joining those three are two other heavyweights, Ipswich, for who this will be the third big tournament in five days, and Barnard Castle, who look like they are going to be among the contenders for some of the biggest competitions in school rugby this year.

U16s

Uppingham are the only side ever to have won this tournament at U16 level and they are again drawn in Group 1 alongside great rivals Oundle. Joining those two are 2018 Plate winners Bedford, as well as Norwich and a strong Mount St Mary’s College group.

Over in Group 2 things are much like the U18 Group, with Barnard Castle, Bromsgrove, Oakham, and Stamford all joined together, as at U18 level, but at U16 level they are joined by another of Uppingham’s great rivals, Buckinghamshire’s Stowe School.
