School 7s: West of England 7s | Draw & Preview – Four tournaments, U18 Boys and Girls, U16 and U14 Boys

This Sunday sees the West of England School 7s take place, four tournaments spread of four different schools in a real festival of school rugby.

There are two U18 tournaments, Boys and Girls, a Boys U16 tournament and a Boys U14 tournament. The Boys U18s will be at Taunton School, the Girls U18s at Wellington School, the Boys U16s at King’s College Taunton, and the Boys U14s at Queen’s College Taunton.

U18 Boys

The U18 Boys is a 16 team tournament, with the sixteen sides divided into four groups of four teams each. Top finishers in the pools go to the Cup semi finals, second to the Plate, third to the Bowl, and fourth to the Shield.

Group A sees the hosts of the U16s and U14s drawn together, local rivals King’s College Taunton and Queens College Taunton, and joining them are two giants, Wales’ Monmouth School, and Clifton College, one of the strongest sides in England this season.

Over in Group B are the U18 hosts, Taunton School. They are joined by another of the very strongest sides in England this year in the form of Millfield. Alongside those two are two sides that have been enjoying their 7s already this year, Bristol Grammar School and Kingswood.

In Group C are last year’s runners up, Blundell’s. Joining them are Bryanston, Exeter School, and a Cheltenham College side that might really fancy their chances.

Group D is the home of the reigning champions, Wales’ Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf. The Welsh giants are joined by an English giant in the form of Collegiate, U18 Girls hosts, Wellington School, and the ever-strong Ivybridge Community College.

U18 Girls

It is the first year of the U18 Girls competition at the West of England 7s, and it looks as though it is going to be a fantastic first event.

Eight teams are competing across two groups of four teams each and from there there are four pieces of silverware on offer. Top finishers will meet in the Cup final, second in the Plate, third in the Bowl, and fourth in the Shield.

Wellington School are the hosts and reside in Group A, where they will be joined by U16 Boys hosts King’s College Taunton, a 2nd VII from Bishop Wordsworth’s, and Clifton College, who have been working hard on their Girls rugby programme for some time.

Over in Group B are the 1st VII from Bishop Wordsworth’s and alongside them are Blundell’s. Collegiate are also in the group, as are Millfield whose side have had some fantastic outings in preparation for this already this season.

U16 Boys

Like in the seniors, the U16 Boys competition is a sixteen team competition, with the sides split into four groups of four, with the group winners heading to the Cup semi finals. Second placed sides go to the Plate semis, third to the Bowl, and fourth to the Shield.

King’s College Taunton are the hosts and indeed the reigning champions. They are located in Group B, where they will face stiff competition from Bristol Grammar, Monmouth, and QEH.

U18 Boys hosts Taunton School are in Group A, where they, alongside King’s Bruton and Uffculme, will be hoping to overcome what is a very good Clifton College VII.

Group C looks tasty, two giants going head to head in the form of Millfield and Collegiate, and looking to impact that group alongside are Exeter School and Kingswood.

Group D meanwhile is stacked, Blundell’s, Cheltenham College, Truro School, and Welsh giants Whitchurch High School will all fancy their chances.

U14 Boys

The U14 tournament takes place at Queen’s College Taunton, though slightly surprisingly Queen’s College are not actually entering a side. Nevertheless, like the other two boys tournaments there are sixteen sides split into four groups of four, with the winners going to the Cup semis, second to the Plate, third the Bowl, and fourth the Shield.

As in every single other of the West of England 7s age groups, Clifton College are in Group A. Joining them are Collegiate, Monmouth, and KES Bath.

Group B sees reigning U18 champions Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf grouped with Bristol Grammar, Cheltenham College, and Sherborne, a cracking looking group.

U16 hosts King’s College Taunton are in Group C, where they have strong company in the form of Blundell’s, QEH, and Millfield.

Group D contains the two U18 hosts, Taunton School and Wellington School, with Kingswood and Plymouth College joining them to complete the group.
