On Sunday Uppingham will host their annual 7s tournament a big chance for sides in the area to get their game right ahead of the upcoming Rosslyn Park National School 7s.

There will be tournaments at U18 and U16 level in what is always a fantastic day of rugby at the famous Rutland school.

U18 Tournament

The U18s tournament is a ten team tournament, with the teams split into two groups of five teams each. The sides will play everyone in their group before playing their counterpart in the other group to give themselves a final finishing position. So first in Group 1 will play first in Group 2 for the Cup.

Denstone College are the reigning champions but will not be there this year, leaving last year’s runners up Oakham as the highest seeds. They are drawn in Group 2 alongside last year’s third placed side Bromsgrove, already a tasty looking group. Alongside them are last year’s 6^th and 7^th placed finishers, Stamford and Ipswich, both of whom will have their sights set high, and a newcomer, St Joseph’s College – who already have silverware to their name this year.

Over in Group 1 are the hosts, Uppingham, who finished in fourth place last year. Alongside them are their great rivals Oundle, who will be hoping to rise up from 10^th last year, as well as last year’s 8^th placed side, The Leys. Norwich finished in fifth last year and will be a good contender in the group this year, so too their Norfolk rivals Gresham’s, a newcomer this year.

U16 Tournament

The U16 draw is actually exactly the same as the U18 tournament, which should make for some fun conversations and rivalries between the two age-groups on the bus trips home.

Sadly the 2022 U16 tournament was cancelled, but hosts Uppingham have happy memories of the U16 tournament having won it in both 2018 and 2020.
