RPNS7s: Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s | Day 1 Review, Day 2 Preview – Kingsbridge win U16 Girls

Kingsbridge became the first ever U16 Girls Cup champions on Monday at the 2023 Rosslyn Park National School 7s on a wonderful opening day of the competition.

The inaugural U16 Girls Cup was running alongside the U18 Boys Vase on an epic opening day, and the South West girls school did it the hard way, beating the reigning U15 Girls Cup champions, Ivybridge Community College in an epic final that finished 15-10.

It means that Kingsbridge will go down in history as the first ever U16 Girls Cup champions on a day that saw them perform brilliantly to top Group F before a tight quarter final victory over QEGS Penrith and a stunning 39-0 victory over Kings of Wessex in the semi final.

It hands them the first silverware of 2023 and there will be more on offer on Tuesday as the U18 Boys Vase comes to a conclusion. 244 teams were whittled down to just 28 on Monday after a gruelling day of Groups and elimination round games, and now the remaining 28 will play a series of mini-group games on Tuesday morning ahead of the knockout rounds later in the day.

All of the action on Pitch RE2 will once again be available on the NextGenXV YouTube Channel and embedded below in this article (the schedule for the day will be available in the description of the stream on YouTube and across our social media channels).

Reigning champions Stowe are still in the hunt for the U18 Boys Vase after a brilliant group performance and a 19-12 victory over Welsh giants Chirst College in the elimination round. They are in a tough Group A through alongside St Paul’s, who looked very strong, and impressive Tonbridge side, and Nelson College from New Zealand who have wowed onlookers from the beginning.

Last year’s runners up, George Watson’s College, have also progressed after some strong performances, they are alongside Schools Cup semi finalists Blundell’s, a strong Abingdon group, and JESS from Dubai, who have looked strong.

Rugby School and Marlborough College have both progressed, the two will both be at the Rugby School U18 International 7s over the weekend and will lock horns on Tuesday at the Rosslyn Park National School 7s alongside another that will be there at the weekend, Monmouth. Monkton Combe wrap up a seriously competitive Vase Group C for Tuesday.

Ipswich have a side in both the Vase and the Cup and progressed to Vase Group D on Monday, where they are joined by Radley College and Solihull and the outstanding King’s Macclesfield, who truly deserve reward for the magnificent efforts this year.

Group E sees Hymers College, St Edward’s Oxford, St Peter’s York, and the every consistent RGS Newcastle grouped together. It looks like another pool that could to any way, and with only the group winners and one runner up heading to the quarter finals, the remaining runners up go to the Bowl, the competition is fierce.

Sherborne have stood out on Day 1 and will look to impress from Group F on Tuesday alongside Peter Symonds’, Grammar School at Leeds, and a strong Bromsgrove side. Meanwhile there is a cracking Vase Group G to look forward to too, with Bryanston, Malvern College, Reading Blue Coat, and a dark horse Cheltenham College side competing.

Tuesday also sees the U14 Boys Cup kick off, with Sedbergh the reigning champions competing in a strong field consisting of a staggering 192 teams. Only the winners of the 48 pools progress to the next round too, an elimination round that sees the winners progress to the Cup 8th Round Pools (3 teams in each) and the losers to similar Plate 8th Round Pool.

Running concurrently will be the U14 Girls Cup too, a 29 tournament with 7 groups in total. Like the Boys, it’s another brutally tough one, with only the group winners progressing to the quarter finals plus one best runner up.

Both the U18 Boys Vase and U14 Girls Cup will be awarded on Tuesday, along with the U18 Boys Bowl. It’s sure to be another epic day at the 2023 Rosslyn Park National School 7s.
