The draws for the 2023/24 Continental Tyres U18 and U15 Schools Cup and Vase tournaments have been made.
Across the four competitions 640 teams will be competing over the two age groups, with eight pieces of silverware up for grabs come the finals in mid-March, the two Cups and two Vases, plus the two Plate competitions for sides knocked out in the first round of the Cups and the two Bowl competitions for those knocked out in the first round of the Vases.
Continental Tyres have taken over the sponsorship of the Schools Cup competitions, joining just ahead of last season’s semi finals and have pledged to support help to raise the excitement levels of the competition in what is a huge year for rugby.
There are some great draws too, reigning U18 Cup champions Oakham have a tie against local rivals Stamford to begin with, a mighty clash at the best of times, let alone with a title defence on the line. U18 Plate winners RGS High Wycombe host Canford in the opening round of the Cup, another good tie and the winner will have a bye straight to the third round, some incentive.
Over in the U18 Vase Old Swinford Hospital claimed the title last year in dramatic circumstances, drawing 33-33 with Samuel Whitbread Academy but winning as the first try scorers. Their defence starts away against The Crypt, while Samuel Whitbread are away at Richard Hale, who impressed many onlookers last year. Harrogate Grammar School meanwhile won the Bowl and their Vase campaign starts with a massive game this year, hosting Ampleforth College.
Over in the U15 competition Northampton School for Boys are the reigning Cup champions, a magnificent effort from a state school that has now made it a real habit of mixing it with the biggest independent schools in the country. They kick off with a home game against Oundle in a section that then has the potential for quick progression thanks to byes. King’s Worcester claimed the U15 Plate last year and start this year’s Cup with a home tie against Cup legends Bromsgrove, a bye awaits the winner in the next round.
Over in the U15 Vase it was Old Swinford Hospital who made it and U18 and U15 Vase double last season. Their defence begins away to KES Lichfield in Round 1. Prince Henry’s Grammar School claimed the U15 Bowl, and their Vase campaign will kick off with an away tie against local rivals Ashville College.
It is set to be another fantastic campaign after somewhat of a rejuvenation in the Cup last year, boosted further this year by sponsorship, and with games in every month from September through to March.
