AFFIES FLEX IN KIMBERLEY

This weekend, Affies showcased their rugby prowess in Kimberley, with victories across the board, save for a narrow defeat by High School Diamantveld’s under-14 A-team, who eked out a 9-8 win. This event marks an auspicious start to the season for the Pretoria team, known colloquially as the White Bulls, particularly highlighted by their first team’s commanding 33-10 win over Diamantveld, the Diamonds.

In a match filled with dynamic plays, Affies’ Janco Purchase, Theunz Marits, Muntingh Hamman, and Albert Smit each scored in the first half, setting a tough pace for Diamantveld.

For Diamantveld, the early game saw Simon Liversage converting a penalty and Carel Viljoen scoring a try. However, Affies’ consistent pressure and strategic plays, particularly noted in Hamman’s quick response try, ultimately swung the match in their favor.

This victory sets a positive tone for Affies who with a balanced team boasting strengths both in the backline and the forwards look poised for an impressive season.

JANSIES GENERATIONAL TEAM IN HUGE WIN AT NWU SPORTS SERIES

In an impressive display of skill and strategy, Dr. EG Jansen High School launched their rugby season with a resounding 85-3 victory over Kempton Park High School. Dominating the field, EG Jansen crossed Kempton Park’s goal line an astonishing 13 times, setting a high bar for the season ahead.

The match, part of the NWU Sport series, showcased exceptional talent, making it challenging to highlight individual performances. The team’s success were notably propelled by outside centre Juandré Jacobs, whose agility and footwork left the opposition scrambling for defense.

The match was a part of a series that saw other closely contested battles. Menlopark narrowly defeated Eldoraigne High School 25-19, with a last-minute breakthrough by full-back Divan Nel securing the win. Despite Eldoraigne’s strong first-half performance, Menlopark’s comeback was highlighted by their dynamic play and resilience.

In another thrilling encounter, HTS Middelburg clinched a 20-19 victory over Transvalia High School with a last-minute penalty, showcasing the competitive spirit of the series. Full-back Jaque Stassen played a pivotal role, contributing all of his team’s points, including the winning penalty.

Nelspruit High School also made headlines with a comeback win against Middelburg High School, overturning a 10-point halftime deficit to win 32-26. The match featured standout performances, including Nelspruit’s Regard Vermaak, who scored two tries.

PAARL BOYS GAIN REVENGE

In a commanding display of rugby prowess, Paarl Boys’ High School decisively avenged their previous year’s defeat by clinching a stunning 73-7 victory against Durbanville. The match, saw Paarl Boys showcase their strength and skill right from the start, with standout player Rubin Dames scoring two tries, including the opening points within the first five minutes. The team went on to score an impressive total of eleven tries, demonstrating their dominance throughout the game.

Players who stood out include Aiden Jacobs, Keagan Smith and keep your eyes close on centre Tristan Joubert who looks a truly frightening prospect.

And to think a large bulk of this squad is Under 17 makes this group an even more frightening prospect.

ST ANDREWS EDGE NICO MALAN IN EASTERN CAPE CLASSIC

In a closely contested rugby match at St Andrew’s College, the home team narrowly secured a victory with a 24-21 win over Nico Malan. The game kicked off with St Andrew’s hooker Joe Wostenholm scoring the first try, which was easily converted by Scott Miles. Nico Malan faced a setback early on when they received a yellow card, reducing the team to 14 players. Capitalizing on the numerical advantage, St Andrew’s increased their lead by scoring off a cleverly executed grubber kick.

Nico Malan responded swiftly, narrowing the gap to seven points by halftime through a converted try by Crisjan de Lange. The second half saw St Andrew’s adding three points through a penalty kick, but Nico Malan remained determined, with Pietman Kleinhans scoring a try to bring the scoreline closer. St Andrew’s managed to extend their lead with a try from flanker Phillip Maske following a successful lineout. In the final moments, Nico Malan added a penalty goal, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.
