5 MATCHES OF THE WEEKEND

HJS END OAKDALES UNBEATEN RUN

The Paarl Boys’ High School rugby team preserved their perfect season record by securing a win against Oakdale Landbou at Buco Brug Street Stadium. Despite Oakdale’s early lead with a penalty by Kurt Coetzee, Paarl Boys’ quickly took control with tries from Christiaan Grundling and Aiden Jacobs. Even with the challenge of playing with 14 men due to yellow cards, Paarl maintained their dominance. Further points were added by Rubin Dames and Viaan Mentoor, extending their lead to 19-3. Although penalties disrupted the game’s rhythm, Paarl Boys’ defense, led by captain Dian Smal, was unyielding. Oakdale managed a late try by Sine Mdlankomo, but it wasn’t enough to sway the game’s outcome.

AFFIES WIN IN INTENSE PRETORIA DERBY

In a nail-biting match, Affies clinched a dramatic victory over Garsfontein with a close score of 33-31, marking their first win against them in three years. The game, characterized by intense physicality and strategic plays, was a showcase of rugby at its finest. Affies’ dominance in key areas and effective defense against Garsfontein’s mauls set the stage for their triumph. Key tries from Nicholaas Grobler, Roux Eagan, and Rikus Strydom highlighted Affies’ offensive prowess, while Garsfontein’s spirited comeback, fueled by Junaide Stuart’s notable performance, kept the suspense high until the final whistle. Ultimately, Affies held firm to secure a memorable victory in this high-stakes encounter.

PRETORIA BOYS TAKE THE SPOILS OVER RIVALS

Pretoria Boys showcased their renewed team dynamics and a back-to-basics approach, triumphing over St Alban’s College with a solid 38-17 score on Brooks Field this past Saturday. The game kicked off with PBHS asserting dominance early on, thanks to a dazzling breakaway try by flyhalf Tumisho Motswi, merely two minutes into the game.
The synergy within the PBHS squad was evident as Motheo Dimpe and Katlego Shebu each crossed the line twice, highlighting the team’s seamless offensive strategy. St Alban’s College mounted a valiant effort, with Neo Gama, a promising winger, slicing through PBHS’s defense for an electrifying try before halftime. Despite their robust set-pieces and Patrick Weir’s commendable performance, St Alban’s couldn’t bridge the gap, especially after PBHS bolstered their lead with 17 additional points in the latter half.
PBHS’s strength was notably visible in their mauls, driving back St Alban’s and laying the foundation for two of their six tries.

PAARL GIM FIRE SHOTS IN WINELANDS DERBY

Paarl Gim’s Markus Muller was the standout performer in a dominant 47-13 win over Boland Landbou, scoring three tries that underlined his team’s superiority on their home turf. Muller’s agility and speed were on full display as he navigated through Boland’s defense to set the pace for the match.
The home team’s strength was evident across the field, with notable performances from props Ely Williams and JJ du Preez, each crossing the line to score. Fullback Freek de Kock played a pivotal role, converting six tries and scoring one himself, contributing a significant 17 points to the total score.
Despite a spirited effort from Boland, highlighted by tries from Lyle Lewis and Juan Swart and a penalty goal by Retagen van Rooi, they couldn’t match the intensity brought by Paarl Gymnasium. The victory solidifies Paarl Gymnasium’s status as a formidable contender this season, showcasing a blend of emerging talent and experienced players ready to challenge any team.

MILNERTONS COME BACK KIDS SHOCK THE BOSCH

Milnerton High School staged an extraordinary comeback to defeat Rondebosch Boys’ High 34-33 on Tinkie Heyns Field, overturning a 30-point deficit. Initially, Rondebosch appeared unstoppable, with Justin Amos and teammates Alutha Wesi, Harry Soboil, and Shakeel Abrahams securing a commanding lead by halftime. However, Milnerton, led by flyhalf Chadwin Sellidon’s precise kicking, sparked a remarkable rally. Captain Frank Hitimana ignited the resurgence, scoring a pivotal try, followed by contributions from Morgan Lodewyk and Sellidon himself. Winger Keagan Wood’s late double and Sellidon’s crucial conversions flipped the script, putting Milnerton ahead in the final moments. Despite a last-gasp penalty opportunity, Rondebosch’s decision to opt for a lineout instead of a goal attempt allowed Milnerton to clinch a stunning victory, marking a memorable match that underlined the unpredictability and thrill of schoolboy rugby.
