6 English schools head to Llandovery, with Millfield looking to retain their 7s crown

Six English schools make the trip across the Severn for the Llandovery College 7s tomorrow, a high quality tournament that is usually an excellent indicator of form ahead of Rosslyn Park.

Last year Millfield picked up the trophy after a ruthless demonstration of sevens precision in the final, where they beat Cowbridge Comprehensive 64-0.

This year the Somerset school will be looking for a repeat of that feat, their 1st VII have won every tournament they have entered so far and look hungry for success after a disappointing end to last season’s 7s campaign at Rosslyn Park.

They are paired in Group E with another English side, Malvern College, and two Welsh side who both face very tough Rosslyn Park 7s draws and will be looking to gain some early momentum here.

Pembrokeshire College are in the thrice running Rosslyn Park Festival winners’ Group, Wellington College, while Ysgoll Y Preseli are in a group of death with Henley College, Woodhouse Grove, and Bro Myrddin, so both will be keen to shake a few trees in this Llandovery College group with Millfield.

Preseli’s Welsh companion’s in that Rosslyn Park group are Bro Myrddin, and they too are involved in the Llandovery 7s, however once again they find themselves in a tricky spot – they have last year’s runners up, Cowbridge Comprehensive, to contend with.

Joining Millfield in their Rosslyn Park group are Bro Morgannwg, so the champions will be very keen to see how they get on here at Llandovery.

Morgannwg face a tricky time of things though, with Treorchy Comprehenisve and English side Hereford Cathedral School for company, as well as Welsh College giants, Coleg Sir Gar, who will be among the favourites tomorrow.

The hosts, Llandovery College, are in Group A along with Queen Elizabeth High School, Bassaleg School, and one of the most decorated sides in English schoolboy rugby history, Colston’s School. Llandovery will be favourites though, despite a heavy beating from Barnard Castle in the Mount St Mary’s 7s on Sunday, and will also be one of the favourites for the tournament.

Their 2nd VII face an interesting time of things, they will face international opposition in the form of Canadian school Streetsville. They are joined by Gower College and Neath Port Talbot College, both of whom will be in action at Rosslyn Park at the end of the month.

Indeed Neath Port Talbot are actually paired with another of the Llandovery 7s contenders at Rosslyn Park, Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, who were last year’s Llandovery College 7s Plate winners. Cwm Rhymni are in an all-Welsh group at Llandovery though, alongside Cymer Rhondda, Gwyr, and Newport High School, who will face the almighty Hartpury College at Rosslyn Park.

Millfield’s second string will face familiar opposition in the form of Sir Thomas Rich’s, whom many of them played in the longer format of the game earlier this term, Bro Dinefwr and Coleg Gwent join those two in Group D.

Finally then two Group H, which features the intriguing sub plot of having two sides who will also be paired at the Rosslyn Park group stage, Brynteg Comprehensive and Coleg Llandrillo. Their clash should therefore be very interesting, while the form of Filton College will also shake things up there, they won at the Kukri Fylde Schools and Colleges 7s on Sunday and will be among the top sides here too. The group is completed by Radyr Comprehensive.

It ought to be a fascinating tournament, one which stands alone as an excellent 7s competition, but when you throw in the additional sub plot of the Rosslyn Park 7s it only serves to heighten the expectation.

One things is for sure though – the winner of this Llandovery College 7s competition will have to play some sublime 7s along the way, this field is that good.
