Team of the Term Vote – Season Summary – Stamford

Our second last season summary ahead of the announcement of the Fans Vote for our Team of the Term on New Year’s Day is Stamford School.

Each day since we announced the vote we have summarised the season of one of the ten shortlisted teams, with Stamford taking the ninth berth ahead of Wellington College tomorrow.

It was, as every recent season seems to have been for them, a tremendous season for Stamford, who completed an outstanding unbeaten term.

Perhaps even more impressive than that though is that back at the start of the second half of term, Stamford made it an incredible four year unbeaten home stretch, one that includes three full unbeaten home season. Such a record is truly outstanding, particularly when you consider the strength of some of the schools in the area, such as Oundle and Oakham.

Stamford are into the last 32 of the NatWest Cup and are favourites to beat The Leys and progress into the last 16, from which they will be among the favourites to mount a real challenge for the title and be in the mix to be the first team to pry the trophy from Dulwich College’s grip since 2011.

Their unbeaten season has consisted of fourteen wins, including victories over local rivals Oakham, Uppingham, and Oundle. Five times they have passed fifty points, often in the Cup, once memorably a 57-3 victory over Uppingham, and one incredible 73-7 victory over St Albans.

Perhaps their most impressive results though have been some of their narrower ones, 14-10 and 10-9 away wins over Denstone College and Bedford Modern respectively were highly impressive, while a last gasp 19-18 victory over Stowe on the opening weekend of the season was a real statement both of intent, and of the quality and determination of Stamford’s play.

With plenty more to come, this could well end up being the most successful season in the school’s history.
