Schools Rugby Weekend Roundup

The cold weather this weekend saw several fixtures forced into cancellation, however there were still a number of exciting matches taking place.

With the U18 Premiership taking a rest for the week, schools rugby was the absolute age-grade focus on Saturday, meaning some schools who had allowed players to play for their academies last week had their top players back this week.

Prediction Competition

As ever we begin our roundup with our weekly prediction competition fixtures, unfortunately though one of the real highlights, a NatWest Cup tie between St Benedict’s and Whitgift had to be postponed due to frozen pitches.

However there were still four top quality fixtures in the competition, including a tremendously exciting affair between John Fisher and Hampton, who were fresh off the back of a NatWest Cup win over RGS High Wycombe. Hampton picked up their second victory of the week, beating John Fisher 24-20.

Equally as exciting, if not more so, was Kirkham Grammar School v Hymers College, two of the strongest sides this year, not just in the north but in the country. Hymers, defeated just once this season, led unbeaten Kirkham at half time, however Kirkham responded to finish the match 17-10 winners, preserving their record.

Brighton College were disappointed to lose to Skinners’ last week, but they bounced back in style on Saturday, beating Portsmouth Grammar School by a stunning 43-0 margin. Similarly Sir Thomas Rich’s, who last week lost to Millfieldbut bounced back well to beat Solihull 29-12.

Around the Grounds

Elsewhere Skinners’ added to last week’s victory with an away win at Campion, 29-14, while Chislehurst & Sidcup built on their victory over John Fisher last weekend by beating Judd 31-8.

Dartford Grammar also built on victory last week, winning 29-5 v City of London Freemen’s, while KES Stratford won 62-0 v Bablake.

King’s Macclesfield showed their quality once again with a 35-15 victory over St Ambrose College, while Manchester Grammar put in a formidable display, beating Audenshaw 62-7.

RGS High Wycombe returned to winning ways after that midweek Hampton defeat with a 33-9 victory over Tiffin, while Warwick continued their fine January with a stunning 53-0 victory over Nottingham High School.
