England & Wales U18 XVs to meet in Swansea

England U18 and Wales U18 have named their sides for this afternoon’s U18 International at St Helens, Swansea.

The 16.00 kick off is Live on S4C (Sky 134), you can see the link to watch online at the foot of this page.

England have beaten France and Scotland so far this season, while Wales have lost to France, as both sides build up to the European Championships at the end of the month, which England are looking to defend.

Ahead of the game England U18 forwards coach, Peter Walton, said:

“Playing Wales in Wales is a huge test but it’s a great way to challenge the players. We put a real emphasis on performance and this game is no different – we want the lads to express themselves on the pitch.”

“We’ve had a few good sessions and we’ll be looking to transfer that onto the pitch. We’ve got some strong forwards and backs who like to play quickly so we’re in a good place. Wales will be tough, they’ll be physical and dangerous but we’ll be ready.”

Meanwhile Wales Head Coach Geraint Lewis said:

“The warm-up against Leicester two weeks ago was disappointing in lots of ways but we learned some important lessons and the French test last weekend was certainly an improvement. The forwards produced a good platform, the half backs showed good control and the back three displayed pace and guile to enable us to score some impressive tries.”

“We need to be more clinical as England will have some dangerous runners who will punish any mistake or missed opportunities. We need to be tight defensively and not give England any space.”

“This is a very important age group in the development pathway. It’s when players are entering academies and tasting intense periods of international rugby for the first time.”

“It promises to be a great occasion. St Helens is a great surface, there will be two international games on show, which we are thrilled to be part of and we will endeavour to play some good, open rugby.”
