U20 Six Nations: Round 2 Review – Italy make history

It was a historic round of action in the U20 Six Nations on Friday night as the second round went beyond all expectation.

The story of the night surely belonged to Italy, who claimed a first ever men’s victory over England after two Nicolo Teneggi penalties gave them a 6-0 win at the Stadio Comunale Di Monigo. Deago Bailey had a try disallowed for England, but the Italians were good value for their win, with Teneggi having two other kickable penalty opportunities.

After such history comes a weekend off for the U20s, and then for Italy it is another massive test as they head to an Ireland side who had a huge story of their own on Friday night as Ben Brownlee’s last-gasp try and a Charlie Tector conversion saw them steal victory at the death from France, 17-16. It leaves Ireland, whose only lead in the game came with that last kick, as the only undefeated side, three points clear of France and England in the table.

Wales meanwhile sit behind those three in fourth after they shot back against Scotland in the second half. The young Scots had, by and large, been in control but with tries from Alex Mann, Joe Hawkins, and Harri Houston Wales turned the ship around before then sealing a crucial bonus point through a late Morgan Morse score.

It all added up to an absolutely epic second round of action, with two late turnarounds, and that incredible 6-0 effort from Italy that will go down in Italian rugby history.

As mentioned, Italy travel to Ireland next on Friday 25th February, while England will be hosting Wales and France travel to Scotland.
