South Africa: 5 Teams of the Weekend

5. Maritzburg

College are clicking, finally! The team everyone was worried about at the start of the season has had an up and down season but over the last few games we have seen them reach their potential that had them as one of the teams to watch.

A win against a strong KES outfit that not many expected certainly raised many eyebrows and many College old boys are now believing.

4. Garsfontein

A powerful unit this year with some exceptional depth, the Pretoria outfit has been one of the most consistent outfits this year and continued showcasing their regional power by defeating EG Jansen, one of the seasons dark horses.

It was not the victory itself necessarily, but the manner with which they dispensed of the Boksburg outfit with an emphatic 43-15 win.

3. Graeme

The Mkhanda boys were not given much of a chance against a potent Queens outfit, many were expecting a high scoring win for the Queenians but the Graeme boys had other ideas.

A quality 22-19 win over the Queens team was certainly not expected but then again this is a Graeme team that continues to defy expectations.

2. Trio

In the Griffons region it has been plain sailing for giants Welkom Gim for many a year now, the program has continually produced outstanding talent and are without doubt the premier program when considering the last few years.

Trio, a completely new school and program were certainly never going to be push overs but any betting man would have not given the team much of a chance to pull off an unlikely win over Gim. Are we witnessing the birth of a sleeping giant?

1. Outeniqua

The Kwaggas are able to beat any team on a given day, when on full song there is nothing like watching the interplay between the massive Outeniqua pack and their speedy backline and this year they have for me personally been one of the most entertaining teams in the country.

Despite this they have had consistency issues losing some games many would not have expected but that has been mixed in with some emphatic wins over top tier opposition and this weekend was no different with a massive win over Paarl Boys.
