Ranking Change: 0

Total Points: 314.44

A slight jump in terms of points for the Munster based outfit with Adam Maher contributing with his callup to the Ireland Under 20 team and Brian Gleeson receiving yet another Under 18 call up. St Igantius, Monument and Palmerston North remain hot on their heels for entry on this list.

49. Bedford School (England)

Ranking Change: +9

Total Points: 315.97

Bedford managed to shoot up this list in huge part to new information provided to us. The All Time 50 is based on information we are able to collect and verify and at times schools or old boys are kind enough to get in touch with us and provide additional information.

We were able to add 7 more England Senior Internationals to this list meaning a significant increase for Bedford who enter our Top 50 for the first time.

48. Sacred Heart (New Zealand)

Ranking Change: -1

Total Points: 320.60

Another tough year for the New Zealanders in terms of our list, Sacred Heart were unable to add any points to their current ranking and thus dropped a place but remain in our Top 50.

As we mentioned last year the great challenge for schools such as Sacred Heart is geography with the Auckland 1A competition arguably being one of the toughest in the world.

47. Royal Belfast Academical (Ireland)

Ranking Change: +2

Total Points: 322.42

With Michael Lowry making his Irish debut and Ireland finishing top of the global rankings at the end of 2022 an extra 10 points were added for the Ulster giants with Jacob Boyd adding a few more with his Ireland Under 18 colours.

A true powerhouse program and respected for taking on all comers it won’t be the last we see of this proud institution.

46. Grey High (South Africa)

Ranking Change: 0

Total Points: 323.42

One of the top sporting schools in South Africa, Grey High unfortunately were not able to add to their tally in 2022 but maintained their 46 ranking.

Although lacking international presence at junior level the school had a very good season on the field of play and 2022 will long be remembered as the year that Kolisi Field became the new main ground for their rugby fixtures.

45. Shore (Australia)

Ranking Change: 0

Total Points: 330.13

No change in overall position but with Jamie Clarke representing the Wallaby Under 20’s Shore managed to net a further 4 points putting some space between them and Grey High.

Although not the powerhouse they once were Shore still continue to produce high level talent although that still needs to be translated into the Senior Setup with their last senior international being Al Baxter all the way back in 2003.

44. Gisborne Boys (New Zealand)

Ranking Change: -4

Total Points: 333.28

This may not seem like a special program to modern day fans but in the 90’s in particular Gisborne were arguably the finest rugby school on the planet, todays team while still playing in the right spirit simply cannot be seen on the same level as what the school historically once were.

No points added in 2022 and a disappointing Super 8 season have seen the team slip even further on this list with them exiting the Top 40 and unless something is done to retain their talent one can see difficult times ahead.

43. New Plymouth Boys (New Zealand)

Ranking Change: -1

Total Points: 335.50

Another school with an extremely strong and proud rugby history New Plymouth are among the leading producers of All Blacks among all schools in New Zealand with 24 having gone through their production line.

The feat is rather impressive when you consider that they have not yet produced an All Black this century with their lats being Greg Feek all the way back in 1999. Only 4 points were added to their 2021 total thanks to Jone Rova’s callup to the Under 20 squad.

42. St Munchins (Ireland)

Ranking Change: -5

Total Points: 339.33

It looked to be a barren year for the Limerick based outfit that was until Jake O’Rioradan received another Irish Under 18 call cup with netted them 2.6 points.

The fact that a drop such as this occurs shows one how fine the margins truly are in terms of these rankings and history shows us things can change quickly especially when you consider what a run Munchins were on in terms of producing senior internationals in the mid 2000’s.

41. Clongowes Wood College (Ireland)

Ranking Change: -5

Total Points: 340.69

No points added this year for the Leinster powerhouse and a costly one at that as the school drops 5 points down the rankings to exit the Top 40.

This should not however detract from the fact that Clongowes have enjoyed a bumper start to the 2020s with Will Connors, Ed Byrne and Dan Sheehan all making their senior debuts and judging by the Under 20 ranks there will be more to follow very soon.
